Creative Talisman

Hello lovely people!

I’ve been going through another one of Julia Cameron’s books… you know, the self-help-artist-therapy-get-in-touch-with-your-inner-creative-child-type books?
I’d probably laugh with you if you made fun of how cheesy they are, but secretly I LOVE them.

Today I had to troll though my life and collect the top 10 negative words anyone has ever used to describe me or my creativity.

You know the ones:
Selfish
Flaky
Arrogant
Lazy
Too serious
Too childish
Weird
Eccentric
Unrealistic
Sensitive

Then I had to think of how those words might be wrong AND how they might hold some positive truth about my artist character.
I had to make a new list of positive words about myself and my creativity.

The book recommended typing them out or writing them on some nice paper and posting them in plain sight. I made mine into a little banner of sorts, with a strange chunk of objects added… little charms and vintage buttons and other lovely things of aesthetic or sentimental value.

I wanted to share this lovely little project because I think the power of words in our lives is indisputable, both for good and for evil.
It’s nice to harness some of the good.

Love,
Sam

p.s. Maybe you’d like to make your own list of new words… If you do, feel free to post them in the comments and share them!

Sam — I love your banner — which just highlights your creativity. Mine would just be a messy written list. I love reading about the journey you are on right now. keep on truckin

Thanks Lori! I miss you. p.s. I’m having a show in NYC soon! (very small one, but still counts!)

It does count! Congrats to you!! Cari tells me that I don’t type with enough exclamation points — so I am giving you a couple of extras.

Hilarious! I love her… I don’t know if she would approve or perhaps critique of my quantity of exclamation points…. I think I’m a bit liberal with them… and likely appear to be overly-exuberant about everything!

hello again! followed your link from your Facebook.
now, what a coincidence, i just bought «The Artist’s Way» a few days ago and i’m on my first week lessons!
i haven’t started on the negative words list lesson, i’m still procrastinating around the Morning Pages… But i think this book might help me in many ways so i’ll just keep on trying to move forward on those lessons.
i really like what you did with that banner!

This would be a fun art project for the “crafternoon” I’m always dreaming of having… snowy day, hot cider & cocoa, affirmation banners… :)

Thank you for this little banner idea (the banner is little, the idea is big). Words are important and I think the idea of countering the negative words from people who really don’t understand is just great.

I’m going to make one and then observe how it cheers me up. I know it will.
