I want to show you the sky…

Posted on | January 11, 2010 | 15 Comments

At some point on our trip, I started compulsively recording things on the video-camera in my phone. The road, the endlessly flat horizon, the way the setting sun turns everything to gold, but mainly I filmed the sky.

Everything is bigger in Texas. The sky is bigger in Texas.

and I’ve always loved the sky. When I was a kid, I used to spread our old sheets out in the front yard and lay on my stomach and read books. When my arms would get tired from holding me up, I’d flip over and watch the clouds floating overhead. Sometimes I saw shapes, but more often I was content to simply observe their passage and think about how the earth was spinning too.

Lately I’m nostalgic about everything. I’m nostalgic about the present. Sometimes it feels like the beauty around me is almost suffocating and I want to get it down on paper, or film, or anything. I want to preserve it and I want my memories to stick. Like in the Parent Trap… remember that? Grandpa smelling of tobacco and peppermint?

So, I made a video of our trip. It’s nothing fancy, but I hope you’ll see what I mean about the sky.

Boy do I ever know that feeling. It’s why I write so much, why I take so many pictures. I wish I could figure out a more perfect way of keeping all those memories alive and vibrant and HERE, but until then, your video seems like it comes pretty close. Beautiful.

Did you do the music yourself? I love it and would like to know who wrote and performed it. I’m not very sentimental but I’d like to make more videos too.

Hi Angelina- Yes, well my husband and I did the music. He played guitar and tambourine and mixed it and I played the accordion. Send me a link someday when you make your own video, I’d love to see it!

This feels like home. And I’m from the midwest. Also, the accordion clearly suits you; I can’t wait to hear what you guys put together with it!

Beautiful video. Some people are just good, which can be frustrating to the rest of us, who feel like we have to work so hard to make pretty things. You my friend, are a natural.

Sam, what a lovely video. It reminds me a lot of Saskatchewan, where I used to live, where the sky was that big and overwhelmingly beautiful. I am one of the most sentimental people ever; I romanticize pretty much everything; I am always full of nostalgia. So this post? This post is right up my alley.

PS. I fear I’m becoming one of those people that somehow manages to post a comment on Every Single Post. Hope that’s cool.
