post holiday highlights

so to sum up, the holidays were wonderful and joy-filled, if lacking the white layer of snow. now we're down to the lazy part, where laundry is slowly attended to amidst starting christmas books (2666 for russ and the summer book for me) and listening to new christmas music (ryan adams for russ and bon iver for me).

we both felt so blessed this year, love living in nyc and are enjoying our last bit of time off before heading back to work on friday.

new years will be spent with friends in a low key manner with movies, champagne and the promise of some rio grande games!

wishing you all a wonderful new year!

merry christmas from me and the pope

dear internet,

wishing with deepest sincerity that all of you have a very merry christmas filled with much needed rest and lots of laughter.

other than that, i particularly loved this quote from the pope's christmas message:

“Wherever an increasingly uncertain future is regarded with apprehension, even in affluent nations: in each of these places may the Light of Christmas shine forth and encourage all people to do their part in a spirit of authentic solidarity,” the pope said. “If people look only to their own interests, our world will certainly fall apart.”

-Pope Benedict XVI

hildegard and oma wigand

my grandmother was raised by her step-grandmother. her mother passed away and her grandfather had re-married a woman who wasn't able to have children of her own. she must have been a pretty amazing woman, as she left quite a legacy with my grandmother and mother, who both told me plentiful stories about oma wigand when i was growing up.

so i already missed a day doing this. to make up for it, here are three pictures! the first two are my grandmother's passport from 1936 and the last is my oldest photo (i think!) and is my grandmother and her mom (ca. 1918 or 1919).

enjoy!

ever wondered what happened to her? i do.

i was amelia earhart in the wax museum in the sixth grade. (all the students selected a famous person from history and we composed a live wax museum!) my dad was a pilot and i loved flying, so being a famous female pilot was ideal.

sure wish we'd taken pictures of it. i think my memory of my costume vastly exceeds the reality of it. but we'll never know for sure.

sound bite from my life lately:

not a new song, but been listening to it on repeat lately during my morning commute. there's something really compelling about it.

p.s. thanks to josh for the embedded audio help!

honesty: the most exciting part of the weekend was finding brooklyn beer black chocolate stout in a bottle at whole foods. limited edition bottling for winter 08-09.

that's it folks.

still working on the quilt. 11 of 21 squares complete. 10 to go. ugh. this is part i'm the worst at... the steady, slow march to completion. but it will be really pretty when done. i'll photograph soon, i promise.

happy turkey week!

I own one pair of Toms and they are wonderful and comfy shoes. Their cause is amazing... so watch this video to see what they're up to for this holiday season and see if you can resist the urge to join the cause!
